On marijuana

To the editor:

I was awake most of last night as I am so concerned about the outcome of the marijuana issue. What happens to businesses like meat markets, delis, and grocery stores that hire people who can come to work high on marijuana, must work around sharp knives, saws, grinders and slicers, and could potentially injure themselves with the equipment?

Maybe they sue the owner for workman’s compensation or are injured badly enough they win a big settlement. Then maybe they lie around and smoke that up, then put in for social security for the rest of their lives, when social security was meant for the elderly to help them in retirement.

Then I thought of the teachers and professors who want this initiative to pass. Do we really need our teachers coming to work high or stoned on marijuana? No wonder so many parents home-school their kids or are very much in favor of the voucher system.

Then look at the bus drivers, taxi drivers, city buses, truck drivers: is it O.K. for all of these employees to drive around stoned, perhaps injuring and maiming numerous people and otherwise endangering people’s lives?

Marijuana is the gateway to use of much harder drugs like crack cocaine, heroin or worse. Do our kids need to have those? We have enough adults out there who barely know their own name as they smoke marijuana or do these drugs in front of their kids.

So many people grow marijuana as it is. There is no way to control it. If you have a brain in your head, vote no on the marijuana issue, please.
