Shortly after 10 p.m., Monday night, a man was fatally struck by a northbound freight train while operating an All-Terrain Vehicle near the railroad tracks.
The incident occurred at milepost 205.5 of the Alaska Railroad’s main line, south of Montana Creek. The freight train had started its journey in Anchorage and was headed to Fairbanks.
As an active rail transportation corridor, the track right-of-way – extending 100 feet on either side of the track – is not open to the public.
The Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Railroad Police responded to the scene and have initiated an investigation.
