PALMER — Darin Smith, 26, was arraigned at the Palmer Courthouse remotely from the Mat-Su Pretrial facility Monday.

Smith is one of three men charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery following a shooting in the Wasilla area Dec. 5. Three people were injured during the incident, one with life threatening injuries.

Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Burton requested a $150,000 bail. Burton factored Smith’s conduct during the hearing in along with the serious nature of his current charges and his lengthy and serious criminal background with numerous felony and assault charges.

Throughout the hearing, Smith scoffed and cursed at Palmer Judge William Estelle.

One of the alleged victims provided a testimony, stating another alleged victim was inside her house during the incident and was shot. She asked Estelle to set the bail as high as possible.

Estelle ultimately set Smith’s bail at $1 million ($500,000 cash appearance and $500,000 cash performance).

Smith’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Palmer Courthouse.

The other two suspects Peter Williams, 32 and Andre Franklin, 41, did not appear for the arraignment Monday.

Alaska State Troopers arrested Smith, Williams and Franklin following a report of gunshots fired near Hollywood Road and Sylvan Road, according to online dispatch records. Troopers received a report that the three men were seen walking from the crime scene holding what appeared to be weapons.

Troopers contacted the men while they were walking on an ATV trail off West Hollywood Road and South Vale Avenue, which was near to the scene.
