Oppose labor legislation

To the editor:

This divisive legislation, also known as the Employee Free Choice Act, is organized labor’s top priority in Congress this year. This act would dramatically change U.S. labor law and employee’s would lose their right to private-ballot elections. If passed it would:

• Authorize a union to organize simply if a majority of employees sign a card

• Drive up labor costs which we can ill afford in our current economy

• Strip employees of their right to vote privately in union elections, undemocratic

• Intentionally keep employers uninformed about organizing drives

• Make workers more susceptible to misinformation, intimidation and coercion by unions

• Make workers face binding contracts which they were not allowed to vote for

Today, employees are entitled to a private-ballot election when deciding whether they want union representation in their workplace. Elections are overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, which has numerous procedures in place to ensure fair, fraud-free elections. Because of the NLRB safeguards, employees can cast their vote confidentially, without pressure or coercion. Let’s keep it that way. Organized labor has spent millions of dollars in political campaigns and will continue to do so to get this passed. Oppose the Employee Free Choice Act and let Senators Murkowski and Begich know how you feel.
