Our Firm Foundation

Jesus is the foundation of our faith and the church. “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be shaken” (Isaiah 28:16).

Humanity rejected Jesus, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone. This is Yehovah’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:22). The rejection of Jesus was necessary for our salvation. If He had not been rejected, He would not have been crucified, and we would not have been justified. Our salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus was “Yehovah’s doing” and what it accomplished is truly “marvelous.”

Faith in Jesus is the only means for the salvation of humanity. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6). Paul echoes this truth, “no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:12).

The foundation of our salvation is that we both trust in Jesus’ actions for us and that we act on Jesus’ teachings. “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).

Jesus affirmed the truth of Proverbs 10:25, “When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever.”

Truly, “the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and ‘Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness” (2 Timothy 2:19). The greatest commandment is “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27).

Scripture makes clear that true love affirms both God’s mercy and His righteousness. “(Love) does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6). Again, “Love must be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” (Romans 12:9).

The world accuses Christians of not being loving when we decline to affirm the world’s definition of love. If what the world defines as love is contrary to the word of God (i.e. is unrighteous), then it is hypocritical for Christians to accept or celebrate it.

The world tries to deny and undermine the foundation of the Christian faith. Psalm 11:3 asks, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Our foundation cannot be destroyed, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away” (Matthew 28:2).

Jesus is the precious cornerstone, the firm foundation of our faith. We will never be shaken.
