For the last month or so, Krista — the AT&T Sports Center master personal trainer — has been trying to convince Amber and I to attend her “Body Blast” class. And for the last month or so, Amber and I have wavered.
But on Tuesday, we decided to get blasted.
We hit Krista’s evening Body Blast class, not really knowing exactly what to expect, even though we’ve seen these classes in session while we were working out. We knew the type of exercise involved, but I don’t think you’re exactly sure how your body will react to something like this until you actually do it. Then there’s also the fact you’re exercising with about 10 other people.
It’s an hour-long class, of fairly high intensity, that incorporates both cardio and strength training. With a few basic tools — the step, small dumbbells and a small barbell — Krista works you through a variety of exercises. You’re not sprinting or powerlifting, but it certainly provides an intense workout that hits a variety of muscle groups.
I’ve always pictured these types of classes including only the most physically fit. But I’ve noticed the Sports Center classes typically include people with a variety of fitness levels. I think that certainly helps those who are new to these classes, or those who are starting to put together their workout routine. It’s far less intimidating when there are other people in the classes who you can relate to. For me, it’s tough to relate to a 140-pound machine who can exercise for hours. I am sure it’s the same for women.
I was also happy to see that I wasn’t the only guy in the class. That’s also one of those misconceptions I had. I just figured these types of classes were attended by only women.
One thing Krista has stressed is that we don’t need to spend two and three hours at the gym to get a good workout in. She’s been showing us a variety of ways to spend about an hour, but get the most out of it. Body Blast seems to be a good example of it.
I have to admit I was a little surprised when I left the class Tuesday evening. First, I made it through without wanting to fall over. I can also see myself returning.
Continued luck to all,
JB
