Pair charged with racing on Pittman

PALMER — A 2005 Subaru Outback racing a 1992 Honda Civic down Pittman Road almost hit an Alaska State Trooper Saturday.

According to documents Trooper Joshua Varys filed in court, Varys was northbound on Pittman coming up on Silver Drive at 5 p.m.

“I observed a green Subaru Outback … traveling southbound on Pittman Road at a high rate of speed around a blind curve,” Varys wrote.

He clocked the Outback going 64 mph and said it had crossed the double yellow lines in the center of the road, entering the northbound lane.

“The Outback was driving recklessly and was out of control as the vehicle skidded sideways around the curve. I thought it was going to crash and I slammed on my brakes,” Varys wrote.

That’s when he saw the 1992 Honda Civic. Varys said it looked like the two were racing.

He said he spun his car around and got behind the Outback, pulling it over, while radioing ahead for another trooper to stop the Honda.

Varys identified the Outback’s driver as Miles Walker, 34, of Wasilla.

“Walker admitted to racing his friend ‘Scott’ in the Civic,” Varys wrote. “At times Walker was belligerent and uncooperative.”

The trooper who pulled the Honda over brought the car and driver back to where Varys was. The second driver was identified as Scott Parker, 38, of Wasilla.

“Parker initially denied any involvement. Parker later admitted that he was racing Walker,” Varys wrote. “Parker said Walker’s vehicle was much faster. Parker said he sped up and Walker passed him just prior to going around the curve.”

Parker and Walker were cited for illegal racing. Walker was cited for not having proof of insurance and arrested for reckless driving. Back at the AST post in Meadow Lakes, he blew into a breathalyzer and got a reading of .054, which isn’t enough for a drunken driving charge since the legal limit is .08.

As of Monday afternoon, Walker had posted bail and been released from Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility.
