WASILLA — One Valley athlete won a state title by leaps and bounds on Saturday, while another won at the wall.

Wasilla junior Brayden Schachle claimed his second straight boys diving title by a wide margin at the Bartlett Natatorium, posting one of the top scores in state meet history. His fellow Mat-Su swimmer, Colony senior Joseph Anderson, also won a second straight crown — but he had to work a little harder for it. Anderson took the 100 breaststroke in 57.70 seconds, just .03 seconds ahead of Dimond’s Jared O’Brien.

Anderson saved his best for last. The senior posted a 59.35 seed time, lowered that to 58.10 in the preliminary round before busting loose in the final. Anderson also placed third in the 200 individual medley for the Knights, who finished eighth in the boys’ team competition.

Schachle’s score of 491.35 was well clear of the 417.90 posted by second-place Tanner Belliston of Colony and ranked fourth among the best scores ever produced at the state meet. Only state record-holder Alvin Spencer of Chugiak (517.25 points in 1982), Dimond’s Cade Bennett (514.1 in 2012) and Pacific Northern Academy’s David Arlington (511.10 in 2005) have scored more points than the Wasilla junior at state.

“I scored higher than I thought I would,” Schachle said after breaking his own school record by posting a score 30 points higher than his state championship performance last season.

He said the difference this year was that he did more head-first dives, upping the degree of difficulty.

“You don’t see a lot of Olympians doing feet dives,” he said.

The Dimond boys and girls swept the team titles, while Chugiak’s Emmie Jennings and Kodiak’s Talon Lindquist won the Most Outstanding Athlete awards. Jennings won the girls’ 50 and 100 free, while Lindquist took the boys’ 100 fly and 200 free. The win for the Dimond boys was the team’s seventh in a row.

The Kodiak boys and Juneau girls finished second in the team standings.

A pair of state records fell, with Eagle River’s Jami Stone scoring 482.75 points to set a new diving mark and the Dimond boys lowering the 200 medley relay standard.

The Colony girls placed 10th, the Palmer boys were 12th, the Wasilla boys were 13th and the Palmer girls finished 15th.

Among the top performances turned in by Mat-Su athletes were double placewinners Millie Snelders of Palmer (sixth in the 100 breast and 200 IM), Colony’s Camille Dayton (second in the 100 fly and seventh in the 100 backstroke) and Colony’s Yanne Toussaint, who was seventh in the 100 free and eighth in the 50 free. The Knights’ Eileen Cyr was sixth in the girls’ diving competition and Colony also got a sixth-place finish in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Anderson also finished third in the 200 individual medley for Colony, which also got a third-place finish from Jake Simmons in the 100 butterfly and a seventh from Robert Zimmerman in diving. Palmer’s Max Snelders led the Moose with a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Note: This story has been updated from the original print version to add that Schachle's diving score set a new Wasilla High record.
