FAIRBANKS — As the Valley’s top track and field athlete — Colony senior Audrey Michaelson — capped her stellar prep career, Michaelson’s heir apparent — Wasilla sophomore Peggy Mathis — put her own stamp on the state.

Both Michaelson and Mathis won three individual titles, ran to a runner-up finish in another and led their teams to a second-place tie in the 4A girls team standings during the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.

Led by Michaelson and Mathis, Valley rivals Colony and Wasilla each placed second with 61 total points. Dimond dethroned two-time defending state champion Wasilla, and used 81 points to win its first team title since 2010. Both Michaelson and Mathis collected 38 points each for their teams.

But the highlights for Valley athletes in the 4A meet revolved around Michaelson and Mathis. Michaelson pushed her career total to six individual state titles, with wins in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Mathis, who was part of Wasilla’s state championship 1,600 relay team as a freshman, won the 100, 200 and 400.

Michaelson and Mathis faced off twice Saturday, in the 400 and 800. Michaelson was runner-up to Mathis in the 400, and Mathis finished second to Michaelson in the 800.

Both of those races came within about an hour during the heart of the race-day Saturday.

“It was really kind of neat, exciting to watch those races so close together, watch them go head-to-head,” Wasilla head coach Leslie Varys said of seeing Michaelson and Mathis face off during the final round. “Each got one of them. It’s a great storyline.”

As she sat on the team bus on the way back to the Valley Saturday night, Michaelson said she felt sentimental, humbled by the success and excited about the opportunity to compete against Mathis.

“She is incredible. I’m extremely happy and proud to race with someone like her,” Michaelson said by cellphone. “I got to race with Morgan (Dampier) and now Peggy.”

Dampier, a former Wasilla standout who recently won a Big Sky Conference individual championship as a member of the Division I Sacramento State track and field team, won three individual titles last season.

Michaelson started her weekend with a win in the 3,200 meters on Friday, and became only the second runner in state history to win a state title in the event three times. Saturday, Michaelson earned her second straight state title in the 1,600 and her first in the 800.

Going into the weekend, Michaelson said her focus was on staying strong throughout the weekend.

“I definitely had goals. Not as much to break records or PR, but feel good for all my races. This is the biggest load I’ve ever taken,” Michaelson said of running in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races. “I wanted to be as consistent as I could, be strong in all of my races. I’m very blessed and feel very grateful. I couldn’t have asked for a better last meet, better last season. I love my team. I’m very grateful.”

Michaelson’s final victory came in her final race of her prep career, the 800, a race in which she had to ward off Mathis.

“I was very nervous how it was going to go. It was my last event, I told myself to go hard, it’s my last high school race, run as fast as I can,” Michaelson said. “(Coach Mark) Strabel gave me some very encouraging advice, a good strategy to stick too. I gave it everything I had left.”

After the meet, Strabel said he knew Michaelson had the ability to accomplish what she did.

“It’s incredible,” Strabel said of Michaelson, who leaves Colony with four individual school track records and a share of a relay record. “She’s one of the top girls we’ve ever had, one of the top female athletes we’ve had come through Colony.”

Michaelson was named athlete of the meet following the championships.

After winning four individual titles during the Region III Championships last weekend, Mathis won her first three individual state titles of her career on Saturday. The sophomore stormed to a win in the 100 meters, clocking a mark of 13.06. Mathis edged Michaelson to win the 400 and capped her day with a victory in the 200.

“I thought it was fantastic,” Varys said of Mathis. “I’m so proud of her.”

Mathis also recorded a personal best time of 2:18 in her runner-up finish in the 800. Varys said she knew Mathis had the ability to have this type of success.

“She’s looked so strong running this lineup,” Varys said. “First we just wanted to try it out and see. Then she got stronger and stronger every time she ran it.”

Led by Michaelson, Colony boasted its highest finish in the 4A girls state standings since the Knights won a state title in 2000. Strabel was ecstatic about his team’s finish.

“I had an inkling we could be in the top 3 based on how everybody was coming out,” Strabel said. Colony had a good head start, thanks to Michaelson and freshman Chase Stephens, the Knights were at the top of the leader board after Day 1 with 20 overall points. Michaelson won the 3,200 on Friday, and Stephens finished second in the long jump during the first day.

“What they just did there was incredible to be a part of,” Strabel said.

Stephens added a third-place finish in the triple jump and fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles on Saturday. Strabel also said senior Mackenzie Thompson was key to Colony’s ability to finish second in the team standings. Thompson scored key team points, finishing fourth in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200.

While Colony had a big lead after Day 1, Wasilla was forced to play catch-up. The Warriors did score a team point during the first day of competition. Considering that, and the fact the Wasilla girls had only eight athletes in the championship meet, Varys said she is very happy with a piece of the runner-up finish.

“We’re very, very happy. We weren’t able to pull out the win, but every year’s different, brings its own challenges,” Varys said. “We met every challenge and brought our best game. We scored points where we could.”

Wasilla sat in third place late in the day and needed a third-place finish during the final event of the meet — the 1,600 relay — to force a tie with Colony.

“It came down to the 4 by 4. We had to get third,” Varys said.

With a runner-up finish for the team on the line, Wasilla’s 1,600 relay team — Danika Ingersoll, Jenna Ford, Mariah Burroughs and Alysha Devine — combined to post a time of 4:24.11 and finish third, just more than a half-second ahead of fourth-place Bartlett.

“I was really happy to tie them. It was fantastic,” Varys said.

Burroughs, a junior, also finished third in the 1,600 and sixth in the 800 for the Warriors. Devine was fourth in the 300 hurdles. The Warriors were also third in the 3,200 relay.

Palmer senior Taylor Blake led the Moose with a third-place finish in the shot put.

In the 4A boys’ meet, Palmer senior Connor Looney earned his first state title with a victory in the high jump. Looney, a basketball standout at PHS, cleared 6 feet, 1 inch to grab the win. Fellow senior Hayden Niekamp placed second in the shot put, with a throw of 45-2.25.

Colony had a pair of athletes place in the boys’ jumps. Senior Gatwech Both was second in the triple jump, and Jordan Black finished fourth in the event. Both was also sixth in the high jump. Fischer Summers was fifth in the discus for the Knights.

Senior William Harren led Wasilla with a third-place throw in the shot put. Junior Mitchell Rilatos was fourth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles for Wasilla.
