Palin just a celebrity

To the editor:

Sarah quitting her elected office (after swearing to defend the state’s constitution) so she can now commit herself to a national message of family values rings about as true as that classic anti-logic: “War is the new peace.”

Since when does explaining away her responsibilities, as an act of serving a higher good, constitute an honest explanation of her abrogation of public trust?

Theater from the stage of politics is not necessarily a bad thing. But to the many who came out to honor her in Fairbanks during the inauguration, I would say this: Democracy, and all that it stands for, is ill-served when a non-critical audience prefers celebrity over truth.

What we value today will certainly create tomorrow’s world. Shall it be one where the love of personal power passes as the new spirituality; or the color of money passes as the new red, white or blue; or shall it be a world led by those with values worthy of emulation?
