Palmer bluegrass band returns to Alaska State Fair

PALMER — Vested Interest made its second appearance at the Alaska State Fair on the Bluebonnet Stage Thursday, Sept. 1.

“It’s nice to see people out again for the shows,” fiddler Andrea Childers said.

Vested Interest is a band based out of Palmer. Its members come from all walks of life. Banjo player Rob Debach is a retired teacher and contractor and Childers is an instructor at Wood and Wire Guitars and Music. Debach said they meet up to practice whenever they can between their day jobs.

“We always want to try and sound better,” Debach said.

Guitarist Jeremiah Millen said they all met through various jam sessions over the years and decided to form a band. He said they all share a passion for music and that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.

“My goal is just to play and have fun together. It’s a great outlet,” Millen said.

Debach said they’re all thankful to have the chance to perform at the Fair again.

“This is like the best thing ever. I think it’s always a privilege to play at the Fair,” Debach said. “It was fantastic. It was really, really great.”

Debach said that fairgoers can always expect a wide array of top-notch Alaskan musicians every year. No matter what stage it is, the local talent is on full display.

“This state is loaded with talent,” Debach said.

Vested Interest performs at private shows and certain local venues such as the Government Peak Chalet and the Skeetawk ski resort. Bassist Keith Barkwood said they all look out for each other.

“It’s like a big family,” Barkwood said.
