Palmer boy places 7th to lead Valley competitors

BIRCHWOOD — Palmer’s Duney Strickland posted a seventh-place finish to lead all Mat-Su Valley skiers at the Chugiak Stampede in Birchwood on Monday.

Strickland was actually one of three athletes credited with a seventh-place finish. Strickland, West Anchorage’s Nick Liotta and South Anchorage’s Sam Dougherty each crossed the finish line at 13 minutes and 27.9 seconds.

Davis Dunlap also placed in the top-20 for the Moose, finishing 12th with a time of 13:43.6.

Gunner Williams (14:38) led the Colony boys with a 25th-place finish, while Leif Johnson (16.15.3) was Wasilla’s top skier at 45th.

Strickland and Dunlap helped Palmer place fifth in the boys’ team standings.

Palmer’s Kimberly DelFrate led Valley skiers with a 12th-place finish in the girls race. DelFrate, one of three Palmer athletes in the top-25, notched a time of 16.53.6.

Stephanie Stephens (12th, 16:55.8) and Amanda DelFrate (21st, 17:15.3) also finished high for PHS.

Caitlin Skvorc (27th, 18:01) led Palmer and Valerie Schleich (52nd, 21:13.6) was the top Wasilla skier in the girls’ race.
