Palmer boys, girls record top-10 team finishes

FAIRBANKS — The Palmer Moose finished the 2008-09 season with a pair of top-10 finishes at the ASAA Cross Country Ski State Championships at Birch HIll in Fairbanks.

The Palmer boys finished eighth in the overall standings, logging a three-day total time of 3 hours, 54 minutes and 35 seconds.

On Saturday, the final day of the championship meet, the Moose skied their way to a seventh-place finish in the 4x5-kilometer relay. Palmer’s team of Ted Hoople, Wylie Mangelsdorf, Davis Dunlap and Dunedin Strickland finished with a total time of 1:07:18.6 in the relay.

The Palmer girls finished ninth overall in the team standings, with a three-day total time of 3:20:31.6.

The Moose notched a 10th-place in the girls’ 4x3-K relay.

Palmer’s Shannon Stough, Amanda DelFrate, Laura Whitmore and Kimberly DelFrate combined to post a total time of 49 minutes.

The Colony boys used an 11th-place finish in the relays to end the season with an 11th-place finish in the overall standings.

The Wasilla boys were 15th overall in the final standings and the Susitna Valley boys finished 17th.

On the girls’ side, Colony was 12th overall and Wasilla finished 18th.

On Friday, Kimberly DelFrate led Valley skiers with a 21st-place finish in the girls’ 7.5-K freestyle with a time of 27:58.3. Abby Jahn (48th, 31:12) led Colony, Morgan Michels (49th, 31:13) was the top Susitna Valley skier and Valerie Schleich (72nd, 32:56) led Wasilla.

Strickland was the top Valley skier in the boys’ 10-K freestyle, with a time of 31:56.

Ian Mannix (28th, 31:59) led the Rams, Schyler Knopp (40th, 32:47) led the Knights and Leif Johnson (54th, 34:26) was the top Warrior in the race.
