PALMER -- The Palmer High School boys' cross-country running squad placed a pair of runners in the top-five and won its class of the Palmer Invitational, Saturday at the Michael Janecek Runnnig Trails.
Senior Rory Egelus finished second and freshman Jake Parisien placed fifth for the Moose. Egelus held the lead at one point, but was passed late in the race by Trevor Baldwin, of Kenai. Baldwin finished the 5-K course in 16 minutes and 33 seconds, eight seconds better than Egelus.
Ryan Lews, 14th, and John Hundley, 15th, also posted top-20 finishes for Palmer.
The Palmer girls, led by Mattie Cox, finished fifth in the team standings. Cox finished 13th at 21:14.
The Susitna Valley Girls finished second in the team standings in the 1-2-3A race. Kayti Krepel led the Rams with a fifth place finish. Krystal Moore finished
sixth.
Usually a much larger event, the field of the Palmer Invitational was greatly reduced this year due to the introduction of the Adidas/Lynx in Anchorage. Bartlett was the only Anchorage area school to participate in the Palmer meet. Colony also skipped the Palmer Invite to run at the Dimond High School-sponsored meet.
Ten 4A schools and 11 1-2-3A schools were represented in the Palmer Invite. The field was comprised mostly of teams from the Valley, Fairbanks and Kenai Peninsula areas.
