Citing personal reasons, Palmer council member Richard Best submitted his resignation from the city council Tuesday.

“For over 20 years, it has been my distinct honor to represent the constituency of the citizens of Palmer on numerous boards, commissions and the city council. Constantly helping to guide and advocate for a better way of governance and giving a voice to things of importance within our city,” Best said in a statement.

Best had become the target of criticism from other council members over police charges of driving without a license after a traffic stop. The charged were subsequently dropped.

But tension within the council and disparaging statements within the council has made for a difficult environment, Best said.

“I see the brightest future for our little community… a place with so much to give, opportunities to understand and grow together, one with diversity in thought and beliefs, regardless of status or position,” he said.

Under the city’s rules Mayor Steve Carrington must appoint a temporary replacement for Best who will serve until the city’s next regular election.
