PALMER — The Alaska Court System recently announced that the Palmer Courthouse will remain closed until Monday, Feb. 14, due to continued efforts to repair the facility.
The Palmer Courthouse has been closed to the public since early January due to damages from burst pipes from the extreme wind and cold temperatures.
According to a recent press release, the water has been removed and the facility is dry but there is still work to be done with the water-damaged carpet, sheetrock, and furniture. No files (physical or electronic) were damaged or lost over the ordeal. Contractors are currently working to make repairs so the courthouse can reopen to the public.
At this point, the customer service office has reopened and currently the only section of the facility that’s open to the public. Hearings are still occurring with participants appearing remotely, by video or telephone.
The Palmer court is currently handling emergency hearings, including domestic violence protective orders, mental commitments, arraignments, and search warrant requests.
All non-emergency proceedings are suspended at this time. They will be rescheduled and notices will be sent to parties or their attorneys.
During the court closure, email filings can be up to 50 pages, exceeding the normal 30-page limit provided on the court’s website.
