PALMER — Over the Colony Days weekend, the parade wasn’t the only activity that drew a crowd.

On the night of June 12, Palmer Fire and Rescue received a report of a house fire on Alaska Street. Prior to arrival of Palmer Fire and Rescue, the occupant leapt out the window to escape the flames. After getting to the house near 408 South Alaska Street at 10:28 p.m. on June 12, the fire was extinguished three hours later at 1:28 a.m. on June 13.

“Traffic was not an issue. Palmer Police Department closed Alaska Street to traffic. Some bystanders hampered suppression efforts by being too close. It was estimated that there were over 100 bystanders in the area,” wrote Lieutenant Eleanor Johnson.

Palmer Fire and Rescue battled the fire with 15 personnel from three engines and one fire truck. Butte Fire assisted with 11 personnel from two tenders and one rescue truck. The origin of the fire was unable to be determined due to excessive water in the area of origin. Palmer Fire and Rescue has responded to five structure fires so far this year.
