For the past three weeks, the world has been riveted by the horrific images coming out of Ukraine as Russian forces invade, forcing millions to flee their homes. With little more on their backs than what they can carry, refugees are escaping to neighboring countries like Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.
In light of the tragedy, several Palmer businesses are joining together to raise money and awareness for World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit organization that has been feeding refugees since the beginning of the war, calling it “Palmer for a Purpose.”
Spearheaded by Alex Papasavas, several businesses will be donating half of their proceeds to WCK.
“It was hard to see the people helpless and trying to escape. Since we can’t be there, the next best thing is to do something to show we care,” said Papasavas of her motivation to put the fundraiser together.
She says the response has already been overwhelmingly positive.
“This is a very giving, supportive community. They come together in times of need and it was to get the other businesses and do what we can to help,” Papasavas said.
The fundraiser kicks oof Friday, March 18 at 5 p.m. with Turkey Red, which will feature a special Ukrainian Dinner menu and entertainment. Reservations are highly recommended, although people may take meals to go.
Saturday, March 19, The Fern will donate 50% of its sales from their acai bowls, smoothies, and coffee, while 203 Kombucha will have live music and a silent auction. Midnight Sun Yoga will have donate 50% of its sales from their yoga classes from March 19 through March 26.
On Sunday, March 20, Bleeding Heart Brewery will feature Seltzer-Mosas and brunch all day, with half of its sales going to WCK.
