PALMER - The Palmer High School girls track and field team is young, but the Moose are deep.

Palmer used that depth to score 122 total points and win the team title of the Mat-Su Borough Championships at PHS this week.

"We've got a good mix," Palmer High track and field head coach Dale Ewart said. "Some years we just have the runners. Some years its just in the field. This year we are getting points in all events."

Palmer scored wins in the field events, distance runs and relays.

The Moose swept the throwing events. Freshman Geneva Ratcliff won the shot put with a throw of 32-feet, 8-inches. Senior Jessie Cramer won the discus with a toss of 95 feet. Ewart said the performances of his throwers have been integral to the success of the Moose.

"Jessie has been in the top three in shot and discus. Right there is 15-20 points a week," Ewart said.

Ratcliff, a two-sport athlete, throws just the shot put to provide a better balance with her softball schedule. Ewart said if Ratcliff also competed in the discus, she would be another Moose to place in the top three in both throwing events.

Palmer nearly swept the girls' relay events. Kailyn Beetch, Jamie Brown, Leilani Newell and Rosanna Lincecum scored a win in teh 4x100 relay for the Moose. The squad finished with a time of 55.09 seconds, more than two seconds better than second place Susitna Valley.

Kahla Oosting joined Brown, Lincecum and Newell on the first-place 4x200 team. Natasha Lee-Gilmore, Sarah Svedin, Jessica Odegard and Melissa Saunders teamed to win the 4x400 for Palmer.

Lincecum (high jump) and Jacquie Lutz (3,200) also won events for Palmer.

Colony, led by a trio of Hallie Huggins wins, finished second in the team standings with 78 total points.

Huggins won both sprints, the 100 and 200, and the triple jump. Adrienna Everett (long jump) and Ali Babcock (300 hurdles) also posted wins for Colony.

A pair of Wasilla Warriors, Hillarie Putnam and Suzanna Caldwell, won events. Putnam placed first in the 100 hurdles, while Caldwell won both the 800 and 1,600.

Susitna Valley had a pair of wins.

Kayti Krepel won the 400 and the Rams won the 4x800 relay.
