JUNEAU — The Palmer girls remain unbeaten two games into the new season after a 44-38 win over Service on Monday to open the 2009 Capital City Classic at Juneau-Douglas High School.
“It was a very physical game,” said head coach Paul Reed. “There were bodies flying all over the place, it was almost like a Rugby match.”
Palmer broke a 15-15 halftime tie to pull ahead in the third quarter, then held on for the win, Reed said.
“We’re playing just good enough to win,” he said. “I think it’s pretty common early in the season that we’ve had some flashes of really good things and some bonehead decisions.”
Senior Jaimi Cox led all scorers with 14 points as the Moose try to keep the rust off over the holiday break from school, he said.
“I do like to try and get some games in between Christmas and New Years, otherwise it’s just a long stretch of practices,” Reed said, adding that he wants to be sharp for league play in January. “We’ve got Wasilla and Colony coming out of the break, so it’s nice to get some games in.”
The Palmer boys lost to Service 52-32 in their first game of the tournament.
Both teams play again today. The Palmer girls will tip off against East Anchorage at 2 p.m. while the boys are set for a 3:45 p.m. start against Wrangell.
