Palmer girls fall to Juneau

PALMER -- The Palmer girls' soccer squad dropped a 3-1 decision to the Juneau-Douglas Bears at Palmer High School on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the Moose, the Bears started out hot and the Moose were a bit slower coming out of the gate.

Juneau scored a pair of quick goals to garner the early lead.

"We were a little tired," Palmer head coach Brian Fish said of his team's early play. "It took a while for us to adapt an aggressive game plan."

Juneau took a 1-0 lead just minutes into the game. Nicole Lupro took the ball deep into Palmer territory, moved past one Palmer defender and passed the ball to teammate Olen Lindquist, who put the ball into the Palmer net.

Lindquist scored again, just minutes later. The Juneau striker took the inbound pass and scored.

After Juneau took the 2-0 lead, Palmer was able to step up its level of play. Palmer's more aggressive style created opportunities for the Moose.

Palmer's speedy front line of Felicia Sandvick, Alicia Berberich and Leslie Berberich were able to quickly move the ball up the field for the Moose.

On a handful of occasions Sandvick was able to move the ball deep into Juneau territory before the Bear defensemen were able to collapse and take possession.

"We did get a couple good opportunities," Fish said. "We were one or two steps behind with supplying the support."

"They collapsed quickly and physically, they were bigger," Fish added. "Their average height is bigger than ours."

Palmer cut the score to 2-1 early in the second period. Sandvick scored on a penalty kick to erase Juneau's hopes at a shutout.
