PALMER — It took the Moose time to settle in, but the Palmer girls scored their first victory of the 2014 season.
Palmer notched all three of its goals during the final 20 minutes of play, and the Moose held on for a 3-2 nonconference win over North Pole at Palmer High School’s Machetanz Field Friday evening.
Senior Elliott Perkins sparked Palmer, converting a penalty kick, and freshman Corby Brooke delivered the game-winner late.
“It took us the whole first half of the game to get into it,” Palmer head coach Harmony Chadwick said. “I think the PK helped. It was after that it kind of turned.”
With the Moose trailing 1-0, Perkins notched the penalty kick to tie the game at 1. Within minutes of the Perkins goal, freshman Avery Parker scored to give Palmer the 2-1 lead. North Pole quickly responded to tie the game at 2.
Late in the contest, Brooke knocked a ball into the back of the net from about 25 yards out to give the Moose the lead.
Kat Godden earned the win in the Palmer goal.
Palmer improved to 1-2 with the victory. Overall, Chadwick said she was happy with the victory, and the improvement from a squad that features four freshmen and 10 underclassmen.
North Pole scored four second-half goals and earned a 4-1 nonconference victory over Palmer at Palmer High School Friday.
Raphael Martinez notched a pair of goals to lead the Patriots to their first win of the year. Josh Million and Garrett Wollman also scored for North Pole.
Senior James Nisbett notched the lone Palmer goal of the game.
Million scored during the 47th minute to break a scoreless tie. Martinez scored the first of his two goals two minutes later.
Nisbett was able to cut North Pole’s lead in half during the 65th minute, but North Pole added two more goals during the final 10 minutes of play.
