Palmer graduate to be seen in nationally televised MMA bout

PALMER — Former Palmer High School standout Jake Heun, now a mixed martial arts fighter, will be featured on the NBC Sports Network Saturday evening.

The 2006 graduate of Palmer High is part of the World Series of Fighting 19 main card, set to take on Teddy Holder at the Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, in the light heavyweight tourney reserve bout. The broadcast is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ADT.

Heun, who fights under the moniker “ The Honey Bear,” is 7-3-0 in 10 professional fights. He’s won two straight matches. Heun won by TKO over Ron Fields Nov. 14, 2014, during the Absolute Fighting Championships. Heun beat Kendrick Miree by decision July 5, 2014, during WSOF 11.

Heun stands at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. Holder, also 6-2 and 205, is 8-1. Holder, 8-1-0, has won seven straight matches, a streak that dates back to 2009.

Prior to his mixed martial arts career, Heun played Division I football at Hawaii. He was a redshirt during the 2008 season. In 2009, Heun, a junior, appeared in 13 games and made three starts at linebacker. Heun played linebacker and fullback as a senior at Hawaii.

Heun also played two years of football at the City College of San Francisco. He led his team in tackles as a sophomore, helping CCSF win the California community college title.

Heun was named first-team all-state at linebacker as a senior. He helped Palmer reach the large-schools state championship game. Heun also lettered in wrestling, track and soccer at Palmer High.
