Former Palmer High School hockey standout Kerry Weiland has struck gold once again.
For the second time in as many years, Weiland, a 1999 graduate of PHS and arguably the most decorated hockey player to skate out of the Mat-Su Valley, has won a gold medal with the Team USA women’s hockey squad.
The 28-year-old defenseman helped Team USA score a 4-1 win over Canada in the title game of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Women’s World Championships in Hameenlinna, Finland, over the weekend.
The sturdy blueliner posted a +3 plus-minus rating during the tourney.
Following her days at Palmer High, where she stood out for four years as a member of the Moose boys’ hockey team, Weiland enjoyed a stellar career with the University of Wisconsin women’s team.
At Wisconsin, Weiland was a two-time All-American for the Badgers and posted 24 goals and 65 assists in 100 career games.
