Palmer High graduate wins gold medal with Team USA

Former Palmer High School standout Kerry Weiland won a gold medal as a part of the Team USA women’s hockey team on Saturday.

Weiland, 27, helped Team USA edge Canada 4-3 in the championship game of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s 2008 Women’s World Championships in China.

A two-time All-American at the University of Wisconsin following her days as a member of the PHS boys’ hockey squad, Weiland finished the six-game tournament with a +1 plus-minus rating and six shots on goal.

The 1999 graduate of PHS earned numerous honors at the prep and collegiate levels. In high school, Weiland was the first girl in Alaska to earn first-team all-region honors on a boys’ hockey squad.

At Wisconsin, Weiland’s honors included four-time All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association, All-WCHA academic and two-time All-American.

Since graduating from Wisconsin, Weiland has won multiple medals as part of the Team USA women’s hockey and inline hockey

squad’s.

She now has five golds and two silvers to her credits in those sports.

Weiland has also played professionally in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
