PALMER - The Palmer High School gymnasium has undergone a major face lift over the summer. All the modifications, repairs and upgrades should make watching games more comfortable for Moose fans.
A combination of state and borough funding allowed workers to install new bleachers, repair damage to the ceiling and floor, and upgrade the lights in the gym.
The project was not just designed to make things more comfortable for spectators, but also to update a gym which has not had any major renovations since the school opened in 1976.
Most noticeable improvement is the new blue and white bleachers, which replaced the dilapidated metal seating. When the bleachers are retracted the PHS letters are spelled out in white against a blue background on both sides of the gym. The new bleachers replace the old metal bleachers which were bent and twisted in many places, and wobbly and unstable.
“The old ones had seen better days,” borough project manager Robert Scott said. “The bleachers were bordering on being unusable and unsafe. It was time to replace them.”
Work on the $131,400 project is nearly complete according to Scott.
“They're installed and operational,” Scott said. “We're waiting on a ball net for the top of the bleachers to keep balls from getting stuck up there. And we are also waiting for aisle covers to arrive which will prevent people from climbing the bleachers when they are retracted.”
Scott added that the aisle covers will prolong the life of the bleachers. They are not designed to hold the weight of a person when they are not fully extended.
Work crews also installed new lights in the gym and repaired damage on the gym floor caused by the bleachers and many years of use.
Palmer high sports fans can get their first look at the new bleachers tonight when the girls' volleyball team hosts Grace Christian School.
The first serve is slated for 7 p.m. Junior varsity action starts at 5:30 p.m.
Fans of the Palmer volleyball and basketball squads will get regular use of out the gymnasium, also used for school functions.
