Palmer junior runs, jumps his way to Big C Relays titles

ANCHORAGE — Palmer junior Jim McCall ran and jumped his way to top finishes during the Big C Relays at The Dome in Anchorage on Saturday.

McCall helped the Palmer Moose boys finish first in the 400-meter relay and also won the long jump during the two-day event that featured more than 900 athletes from 36 schools. McCall and teammates Chris Korkner, David Clement and John Scoresby used a time of 45.09 seconds to beat a pair of Northern Lights Conference rivals to the finish line. Kodiak finished second and Soldotna was third in the event.

McCall edged Colony senior Matt Jaronik to win the long jump. McCall jumped 20 feet and 4 inches, while Jaronik hit 20-1.5. McCall was also fourth in the 100. Scoresby finished third.

The Wasilla girls won the 1,600-meter sprint medley. Dajanae Harris, Cori Schleich, Keri Clump and Morgan Dampier clocked 4:20.19 in the event that features a pair of 200-meter legs, a 400 and an 800. Jenna Ford, Mandi Rinngenberg, Brooke Nelson and Alison Kelley ran to a third-place finish for the Wasilla girls in the 3,200 relay.

Senior John Knowles led the Wasilla boys with top-three finishes in both the shot put and discus. He was third in the shot and second in the discus.

Colony junior Shellina Irwin also won an individual title during the meet, finishing first in the shot put. Houston’s Danielle Barney finished second in the girls’ discus.
