Palmer pair paces boys to strong finish at Bartlett Invitational

ANCHORAGE — “Regions. That’s where we go from here,” Palmer cross-country head coach John Bishop boldly stated following a strong statement made by his runners on the trail at Saturday’s Bartlett Invitational.

Palmer’s Mason Minturn finished third in 16 minutes, 52.6 seconds and Chris Osiensky fourth with a time of 16:56.8. The pair led a strong Palmer boys’ team to a fourth-place finish overall. Lathrop won the meet with 73 points, followed by Kodiak with 78, Service at 89 and Palmer with 100 points.

Wasilla’s girls did not dominate the podium as they did early and often last fall, but coach Gary Howell was still pleased with the Warriors’ effort. Last season, the Wasilla girls won every meet en route to its first girls’ state cross-country title, but the margin of victory decreased as the season went on.

On Saturday, Wasilla finished third overall. Junior Jenna Ford finished 10th for the Wasilla girls and senior Mariah Boroughs paced the defending state champions in eighth place to lead the Warriors.

Senior Noah Ripley finished 20th for the Warrior boys Saturday.

“We’re trying a new strategy,” Howell said. “Noah ran great, better than I’ve ever seen him run. He went from 27th to 15th during the course of the race. Being able to make that kind of jump and be in the company he was in is great.”

Palmer sophomore Hana Bohman finished 16th for the Moose. Bohman is the highlight of a small girls contingency for the Moose.

“It’s really frustrating,” Bishop said. “To have 20 boys and only 10 girls, and little with varsity experience, they can’t have the same type of competitive practices that the boys do.”

The Moose will not field a full varsity girls’ team this year, which makes them an anomaly in the Valley with teams like Wasilla fielding more than 50 girls.

Colony junior Audrey Michaelson solidified her status as one of the state’s elite women runners with a sixth-place finish. At 27th, Brandon Schafer was the top boys finisher for the Knights, whose boys team is in a rebuilding stage after losing much of the varsity squad from last year.

But for Palmer, the day race unfolded nicely, Minturn said.

“Glorious,” he after the race. “That’s how it felt.”

New to Palmer cross-country running, senior Schyler Knopp added to his team’s strong finish in 19th place. Joe Day and Andrew Liebing finished out an impressive performance from the Moose in 30th and 34th respectively.

“Our guys are four-year guys, challenging, pushing each other, screaming at each other in practice. It’s self-created momentum,” Bishop said.

Minturn and Osiensky started off the race near the front of the pack and stayed there until the finish. Osiensky was closing in on the eventual winner Kyle Hanson of Lathrop until the kick to the finish with 1 kilometer left. The Palmer boys sprinted up three places before crossing the finish line.
