PALMER — The 33rd Annual Palmer Pride Picnic is scheduled for July 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Palmer Train Depot.
“This is the 33rd year that we celebrate being a community that has willing hands and generous hearts,” event organizer Linda Combs said.
Each year, citizens across the Palmer community receive awards for their contributions that enrich the area. Whether it’s a beautification award or citizen of the year, there are numerous categories where locals can shine.
“We’re proud of every aspect, and we just kind of pat each other on the back that day,” Combs said.
According to Combs, the City of Palmer, the Greater Palmer Chamber of Commerce, local merchants, and members of the public all work together to keep this annual ceremony going. She said that local businesses donate food and other resources each year.
“They’re building on the traditions and that’s what I’d like to see,” Combs said. “It’s a good time for those recognitions, especially after COVID.”
Combs noted that their overall attendance was significantly lower last year. She said they used to see anywhere from 200 to 300 people at the event.
“I’d like to see it back to that strength,” Combs said.
According to Combs, longtime Palmer resident and business owner Janet Kincaid established the Palmer Pride Picnic after the community competed in the All American City competition. She said that Palmer didn’t win, but the people rallied together quickly to highlight what makes their community a great place to live. She said the people of Palmer reflect that spirit through their daily actions, and this ceremony highlights that sense of pride for the community.
“I think her vision has continued,” Combs said. “We’re not gonna keep Palmer vibrant if we don’t keep growing,” Combs said.
