PALMER — New to the Alaska State Fair this year is the Palmer Rotary’s Cabbage Classic. The fundraiser invites people to guess the weight of the winning cabbage in this year’s Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off at 7 p.m., Aug. 31 in Farm Exhibits on the fairgrounds.
Here’s how it works. Buy a ticket, guess the weight and wait for the results to be announced Aug. 31.
Last year’s winning cabbage was grown by Wasilla’s Steve Hubacek and weighed 126.40 pounds. He set the current world record at 127-pounds in 2009.
Guesses that include ounces must be made in 5/100 increments, which means the second digit past the decimal point must be a 0 or 5. For example, 126.40, 123.35 or 120.10 are acceptable guesses. Unacceptable guesses include 126.41, 123.34 and 120.09.
The winners will receive equal shares of half of the net proceeds. Proceeds from the event will benefit charitable purposes for the state fair and the Palmer Rotary.
Tickets are $3 each and are for sale at a booth adjacent to Farm Exhibits on the Yellow Trail through 4 p.m., Aug. 31.
Cabbage growers, their families, Alaska State Fair employees and Palmer Rotary members are not eligible to participate.
