PALMER ¬— It’s been a good summer on the mountains for Christy Marvin.
About a month ago, Marvin won the Mount Marathon race in Seward. Saturday, Marvin captured a title in another famed Alaska mountain race. But this time it was in record-breaking fashion.
Marvin conquered the 14-mile course, which includes 9,100 feet of vertical gain, in 3 hours and 32 minutes to win the race and set a new course record. The Palmer woman finished more than a half-hour ahead of Paige Brady, the runner-up in the winner’s class.
Eric Strabel, the reigning men’s winner of Mount Marathon, also took home gold Saturday afternoon. The former Colony High School running and skiing star was the lone runner to break three hours Saturday, finishing with a mark of 2:58:32. Cody Priest (3:10:07) was second, and Marvin’s husband, Ben, finished third in the men’s class with a time of 3:23:15.
Forty-two men and 18 women completed the race, which began Saturday morning at the Lazy Mountain trailhead. The out-and-back course sent runners up Lazy Mountain, down the backside of the mountain and up Matanuska Peak.
