Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER — Ruby Woodings picked the perfect time to have the best day of her track and field career.
The Palmer senior used a pair of personal bests to earn state titles in two events during the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships Saturday at Palmer High School.
Midway through the day, Woodings recorded a personal-record time of 59.17 seconds during her win in the 400 meters. Later in the afternoon, Woodings did it again. This time she clocked a mark of 2:21.42, another personal best, en route to a victory in the 800 meters. The state titles were the first of her career. Her previous best was third in the 800 last year.
In the 400, Woodings broke the 1-minute mark officially for just the second time in her career. Earlier this season at the Palmer Invitational, Woodings set a then personal best of 59.89. She was one of a pair of runners to break 1 minute in the finals. Bartlett’s Damecia Jones was the runner-up with a time of 59.95. In the 800, Woodings cut about two seconds off her previous personal best a time of 2:23.75 she used to finish third in state last year.
Woodings also saved her best for last. She had the fifth fastest time in the preliminary round in the 400 and 800 the day before winning gold in both races.
Colony senior Brandon Nicholson also won a pair of state titles. Nicholson may not have set a personal best, but he did break his own state record in the 4A boys’ triple jump. Nicholson hit 46 feet, 7 ½ inches to win his third straight state title in the triple jump. He also broke his own state record, a mark of 46-2 he set last year. But Nicholson fell short of his personal record of 47-2 ½ he set last week at the Region III Championships in Homer.
After the event, Nicholson said he was a little disappointed in his mark.
“In my mind, 46, 47, it’s a foot,” Nicholson said. “I wanted to push out my record a little bit further.”
But Nicholson said he was happy to break his own record.
“I’m happy with that. But I know in my mind I could have done better,” Nicholson said.
Nicholson, who also won the 4A boys’ high jump with a season-best mark of 6-4 on Friday, now has four individual state titles to go along with nine Region III individual championships.
“All in all, I’m pretty happy,” Nicholson said of his prep career. “I’m excited I get to continue in track at UAA.”
Palmer senior Madi Ko and Wasilla senior Ceil Dunleavy also won state titles. Like her teammate on the Moose, Woodings, Ko also used a personal record to score her first state title. Ko hit 36-8 ¾ to win the 4A girls’ triple jump. Her mark was more than two feet farther than her previous best at Palmer. Ko was also second in the 4A girls’ long jump.
Dunleavy made state history with her fourth straight state title in the 4A girls’ high jump. Dunleavy hit 5-6 to cap her career with another championship.
“It’s a weight lifted off her shoulders,” Wasilla track and field coach John Paramo said. “The four-peat was weighing on her mind. It was weighing on my mind.”
As tears ran down her cheek as she stood with her coach by her side, Dunleavy worked to describe the emotion.
“I’m feeling a little overwhelmed right now,” she said. “I feel really lucky, really blessed. I’m happy to come out and compete.”
Led by Nicholson, Colony led Valley squads in the team scores, with a third-place finish in the team standings. In addition to Nicholson’s two titles and a runner-up finish, Jon Pomrenke finished fourth in the discus. Jeffrey Lautrup (1,600), Brandon Carr (shot put) and Jarek Shultz (discus) each placed sixth. Andres Ramirez-Nunn was seventh in the shot put and Gavin Block placed eighth in the 1,600.
The Colony girls finished fourth in the team standings. The 3,200 relay team — Alyssa Miles, Jill Bowker, Cathelyne Powers and Coleen Geraghty — led the Knights with a runner-up finish. Geraghty was third in the 1,600. Lily Sessom was third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Isabelle Weiss finished fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. Elaina Watson placed sixth in the long jump and seventh in the 100. Grace Looney (fourth) and Kristina Tennesen (fifth) both reached the finals in the discus. Bokwer (3,200) and Brooklyn Kopsack (triple jump) each finished eighth.
The Palmer girls were just a point behind Colony in the standings, and finished fifth overall. In addition to the two state titles won by Woodings, and Ko’s first and second-place finishes, the pair teamed with Rya Berrigan and Amy Baxter to finish third in the 1,600 relay. Berrigan was also seventh in the 400. Emma Uschmann finished sixth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Lorna Suaava was eight in the shot put.
Larry Cutsforth (400), Lev Robertson (800) and Nick Johnson (triple jump) each placed fifth in finals to lead the Palmer boys. Josiah Alverts (3,200) and Matthew Daniels (110 hurdles) also placed sixth, while Donovan Eiman was seventh in the triple jump and Johnson finished eighth in the long jump.
In addition to Dunleavy’s win in the high jump, Victoria Malak placed sixth in the shot put for the Wasilla girls.
At the 123A level, Allison VanPelt led the Houston Hawks with a third-place finish in the long jump. She was also fourth in the 800, sixth in the 100 and eighth in the 1,600. Ben Bitler was fourth in the discus for the Hawks.
Lizzie Palmberg led Wasilla Lakes Christian with a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles and placed fourth in the 300 hurdles.
Hailey Holland led Redington with a sixth-place finish in the discus and seventh in the shot put.
