Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER — Running on his home trails in the final race of his high school career, Palmer senior Wylie Mangelsdorf wanted to take a shot at running with the state’s best.
And that’s exactly what he did.
Mangelsdorf ran with Kodiak’s Dylan Anthony for the first third of the first third of the 4A boys race.
But Anthony distanced himself from the pack during the final two laps of the race, and claimed an individual title during the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Cross Country Championships at the Michael Janecek Trails at Palmer High School on Saturday.
“I wanted to stay with Dylan the whole way and try to get him at the end,” said Mangelsdorf, who finished a career-high fifth in the state championships. “I did the first lap like that, but then he started pulling away.”
Anthony used a time of 15 minutes and 41 seconds to win the state title, the fourth by a Kodiak runner in as many years. Service’s Silas Talbot and Robert Walgren were second and third, respectively. Isaac Updike, of Ketchikan, finished fourth.
Mangelsdorf’s fast start may have been a gamble, but the Palmer senior was certainly happy with posting the top-five finish.
“I think I may have started a little too fast,” Mangelsdorf said, who clocked a time of 16:09.
But he also said it was a fast field.
“There were really good running conditions,” Mangelsdorf said. “The ground was hard the whole race.”
Mason Minturn was 30th and Jacob Whipple finished 33rd to also help lead Palmer to a Mat-Su-best seventh place finish in the team standings.
Service, with four runners in the top-15, won the team title. Juneau-Douglas was second and South Anchorage was third.
Senior Dylan Crawford used a 27th-place finish to help lead Colony to an eighth-place finish in the team standings.
“He was one who really stepped up,” Colony head coach Mark Strabel said of Crawford, and his time of 17:13. “He had a great race. Same with Tanner (Enloe).”
Enloe finished 36th for Colony, and Alex Reimer was 46th.
Wasilla placed a pair of runners in the top-40. Seniors Drew Ford and Alden Lee finished 39th and 40th respectively. Another senior, Jaron Christensen, recorded a personal best time of 17:35 with his 47th-place finish.
“As a senior for him to PR at state is pretty cool,” Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said.
