Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Like all of her teammates and fellow competitors, Sophie Wright lost her 2020 track season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Palmer senior is taking advantage of all of her opportunities in 2021.
Wright won all three of her individual events to lead Valley athletes during the Region III Championships at Wasilla High School. The senior finished first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. She used a personal record time of 5 minutes, 20.31 seconds to win the 1,600, and also clocked a 2:24.21 in the 800 and 12:07.03 in the 3,200. Wright also helped the Moose place second in the girls 1,600-meter relay.
Palmer finished second in the girls team standings with 113.5 total points.
Colony senior Hana Tennesen also earned multiple wins. Tennesen used a pair of personal records to sweep the girls throwing events. Tennesen notched a mark of 37 feet, 11.75 inches to win the shot put, and hit 123-02 in the discus.
Colony finished third in the girls team standings.
Wasilla edged Palmer in the boys team standings by four points, placing second with 108 total points. Timothy Grisco used a personal record time of 11.45 to win the 100. Peter Kolomeychuk set a personal best in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 48-02. Kade Reynolds won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.76.
Brynn Miller led the Palmer boys with first-place finish in the high jump. Miller set a personal record with a mark of 6-3. Palmer also won the boys 400-meter relay.
Colony finished fourth in the boys standings. Christopher Spring and Felix Robertson won individual events. Spring used a personal best time of 23.35 to win the 200. Robertson finished first in the triple jump with a mark of 41-0.75.
Wasilla was fourth in the girls team standings. The Warriors swept the sprints. Abigail Burke set a personal record in the 100 with a time of 13.52. Abbie Baird also had a personal best in the 200 with a time of 27.96.
Houston and Redington also crowned champions in the Region III Division II meet. Emily Bitler led the Houston girls, using a personal best mark of 113-03 to win the discus. Cort Sandefur led the Redington boys with a first-place throw of 129-10 in the discus,
