Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer’s stellar senior continued her perfect season Saturday.
Sophie Wright finished first in the varsity girls class of the Wasilla Trailblazer Invite cross-country running meet in Wasilla. Wright has now placed first in each of the four races of the season. In addition to her latest win, Wright ran to a first-place finish at the Redington and Colony meets, and the George Plumley Invitational last week at Palmer High.
In her latest run, Wright clocked a time of 20 minutes, 24 seconds at the Wasilla meet. Wright set a personal record of 19:30 at the George Plumley. Saturday also marked the second straight year in which Wright has earned gold at the Wasilla Trailblazer.
Colony senior Garrett Streit finished first in the boys varsity race, with a time of 17:48. Streit also won for the second straight week. He was first at the George Plumley last week. Streit started his season with a runner-up finish at Redington.
The Colony Knights swept the team standings. Streit helped Colony finish first in the boys class with 22 total points, and led a Knights sweep of the top three spots. Straight edged sophomore teammate Zac Cheyette, who finished second with a time of 17:51. Freshman Tobias Buchanan was third at 17:58.
Sophomore Shea Alaniva led the Knights with a second-place finish and time of 21:47 in the girls race. She was also one of three Knights in the top five. Freshman Mariella Belliston (22:07) was third and senior Lydia Bushey (22:41) finished fifth. Colony had 22 total points in the girls team standings.
Wright led Palmer to a second-place finish in the girls team standings Juniors Monroe Swain (23:31) and Elisabeth Hennemann (23:38) finished seventh and eighth for the Moose. Freshman Mya Campbell (22:12) led Redington with a fifth-place finish.
Palmer also finished second in the boys team standings. Freshmen Fischer Adams (18:05) and Tobin Miller (18:21) finished fourth and fifth for Palmer. Junior Brennan Lackey led Wasilla with an 11th-place finish and mark of 18:39.
