Palmer to participate in “Extra Mile Day” on Nov. 1

Volunteers who “go the extra mile” in service and contribution are being celebrated across America on Extra Mile Day. On Nov. 1, over 500 mayors from all 50 states are making a declaration to recognize the difference making value that volunteers are adding in their local communities.

Mayor Edna DeVries joins the list in appreciating the selfless volunteers in Palmer.

In association with Extra Mile America, Extra Mile Day is a growing movement dedicated to highlighting the power of volunteerism and its impact. The declaration’s “go the extra mile” message continues to resonate and build. Created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities, over 500 mayors are expected to make the 2020 declaration.

“Going the extra mile and making a difference happens in a thousand different ways,” shares Shawn Anderson, the motivational author and visionary behind the day’s declaration. “It's the frontline workers who are supporting all of us in 2020. They are the parents helping parents with homeschooling; they are the people stepping forward to deliver food to those who can’t go out because of COVID; they are the volunteers helping abandoned pets find loving homes. It’s these people - and hundreds of others - who unselfishly add value to our communities.”

Anderson continues, “But Extra Mile Day is more than one day a year to recognize ‘go the extra mile’ heroes; it’s also a reminder that every day is an opportunity to do more and give more to create positive change. Extra Mile Day reminds us not to point fingers and wave our arms at everything that’s going wrong in society. Instead, it’s a nudge to look in the mirror and ask, ‘How am I going the extra mile to make things better?’”
