ANCHORAGE — During the first day of a two-day limited event meet at The Dome in Anchorage, the Palmer boys track and field squad finished near the middle of the 12-team pack. But on Saturday, Palmer scored wins in two of the three boys events.
Senior Wylie Mangelsdorf and junior Jim McCall each posted first-place finishes for the Moose Saturday morning. Mangelsdorf clocked a time of 9 minutes and 54.20 seconds to win the 3,200. McCall used a leap of 19 feet, 8 3/4 inches to win the long jump.
McCall edged Palmer freshman Levi Turner to finish first in the long jump. It was the junior’s second win in the event in a week. McCall also won the long jump at the Big C Relays last week at The Dome.
Freshman Chris Osiensky was fifth in the 3,200 on Saturday.
On Friday, sophomore Joe Day led the Palmer boys with a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Mangelsdorf was third in the 1,600 and freshman Brian Semler finished sixth in the 400.
The Palmer girls posted a pair of top-three finishes in the relay events. Palmer’s team of Gretchen Winter, Carol Meyer, Tress Whitfield and Morgan Whitfield was second in the 1,600 relay. Sarah Houchen, Monica Nuernberg, Taylor Blake and Jamie VanHoomissen ran to a third-place finish in the 400 relay. Erin LaMere and Nuernberg finished fourth and fifth in the shot put.
The meet marked Palmer’s fourth trip to The Dome this season. The Moose will head north next week and compete in a two-day meet at Lathrop High School.
