Palmer Wayfinding project looking for volunteers

The City of Palmer is looking for volunteers to fill the seven seats of an advisory committee for the Palmer Wayfinding Project.

A $45,000 appropriation from the Alaska State Legislature funds the project, which will see Palmer’s signage streamlined into a series of well-designed posts that clearly point the way to places such as the local post office and parks. The signs will lead visitors from the highway and into Palmer proper.

But they’re designed for visitors and residents alike, said Palmer director of community development Sandra Garley.

“Even people who’ve lived here several years often don’t know that we have an arboretum, and there’s no signs to point you to the arboretum,” Garley said. “The whole concept is to make sure you know what we have here, and also that we don’t just proliferate signs, but we thoughtfully design the signs so that you know this is coming to you from the City of Palmer.”

Palmer-based consulting firm Sustainable Design Group has been hired by the city to come up with three design options, Garley said. The city council will ultimately select and approve the final designs.

Members of the advisory committee will have early influence on the design and placement of the signs, Garley said.
