WASILLA — A little rain couldn’t dampen the energy of about 250 Valley residents who gathered at Wasilla Lake on Saturday to send a message about government.
In conjunction with other events across the country, the local Tea Party Rally was a focal point for sign waving, speech making and camaraderie to encourage change in government from the top down. Some spoke against President Barak Obama’s policies, including the controversial debate over universal health care. Others, like Adam and Kelly Hulin of Wasilla, saw the Tea Party as a forum to convey a more broad message.
Armed with hand-made signs and fliers about the swine flu and what the Hulins call the government’s 9/11 cover-up, the couple shared their views with any willing to listen.
Frontiersman: What brings you out to the Tea Party rally?
Kelly: Everything, all the tyranny that’s going on in this country — mandatory vaccines, the new world order, the 9/11 cover-up. We are (responsible). … Seven of the 10 (9/11) commissioners said there was a cover-up.
Adam: It’s up to us. It’s up to us to inform other citizens about what’s going on. Some people have no idea the tyranny going on.
F: What changes in our government do you want to see happen?
A: I want to see us turn back to our Constitutional government.
K: I want to throw everybody out of Congress; start again.
A: Well, not everybody. There are the Ron Pauls there.
F: For you, this isn’t just a rally taking President Obama or his administration to task, is it?
A: No, absolutely not. It’s much, much bigger than that. Obama’s just a new face. They just put a black face on the new world order.
K: Republican and Democrat, they’re the same. They do the same agenda and people need to realize that.
F: Do you subscribe to any of the mainstream political philosophies in the United States?
K: No.
A: No, I believe the left-right paradigm is just the classic divide and conquer technique that’s being used by the media to keep everybody divided — left, right, liberal, conservative. Move forward and get a look at the bigger picture. It’s not a left versus right thing. It’s our Constitution being whittled away.
F: What message do you think the nation can get from Alaska’s rally?
A: If Alaska had something to say to the Lower 48, I’d want them to know we’re standing up, we’re going to come together to talk about (issues). We’re not just going to lay down and turn on our TVs and return to our regularly scheduled programming. We’re going to research the facts, we’re going to stand up for our rights and stand up for our Constitution and hopefully set an example the rest of the nation can follow.
F: Are you believers in U.S. government?
A: Yes, absolutely. Small government, though. Big government’s bad.
K: There’s $23.7 trillion stolen from the American people. Poof, just gone. The joke’s on us. The swine flu’s a hoax.
F: What do you think about President Obama and his policies?
A: Obama doesn’t work for the interest of the people. He’s a puppet of the corporations and the banks. That’s fascism. We’ve taken ourselves to fascism, where our elected officials are no longer working for the interests of the people.
F: How do you respond to the criticism the president has had on race issues or that those who take him to task are racist?
A: I’d say that’s a cop-out. That’s ridiculous. He’s not even black. The fact that he’s black is a lie. He’s only 6 percent black. He’s actually 69 percent Muslim.
K: That’s just a way for them to get us to fight with one another. He’s really only 6 percent black.
F: Do you question Obama’s legitimacy as president?
A: You know, I would, but that’s not my battle here today, but I do question that.
F: How would you respond to those who may say, “Ah, those two are just a couple of conspiracy theorists?”
K: They’ve always brought up “conspiracy theorist” about one world order, one world currency. They were right, weren’t they? The conspiracy theories are the correct theories.
F: What do you think about living in a country where you can come out here and be critical of your government and not be fearful soldiers will show up and shoot you?
K: Well, that could happen any time. Yes, I do think it could happen. I think there are a lot of foreign troops here. We’re a military industrial complex in this nation. With the swine flu, they’re talking about forced evacuations, calling the National Guard. That happens all the time in the Lower 48, the National Guard doing checkpoints to check for seat belts and look through people’s vehicles. … Thank goodness they haven’t started doing that here in Alaska.
