ANCHORAGE — It’s been a gradual crawl to the top for five Colony High School runners.

At the ASAA/First National Bank of Alaska Track and Field State Championships on Saturday, the Colony girls’ 3200-meter relay team secured a first-place finish with a time of 9 minutes, 51.93 seconds — about a second and a half faster than their region finish the week before, which won them the region title.

Colony distance coach Mark Strabel said he had “a good feeling” about the girls’ ability to perform at state, but was also “nervous as hell,” given the competition.

“Regions is all about team depth, and state is about the stars,” he said.

Last year, a Soldotna High School team set a new state record in the 3200 relay at 9:27.39, a good 24.5 seconds off this year’s winning time. Though that school graduated two members of its all-star team (Sadie Fox and Dani McCormick), Strabel said he was a little concerned about a couple of Anchorage teams.

“We knew South and Dimond would be knocking on our door,” he said.

But Strabel needn’t have worried. Junior anchor Coleen Geraghty crossed the finish line more than 7 seconds ahead of both of those teams on Saturday.

It was the first time since at least Strabel’s track coaching tenure began in 2007 that a Colony girls 3200 relay team had won a state championship, he said.

Senior Jordyn Block, who led the team, said the win felt “amazing,” to nods from the rest of her teammates.

“We all kinda knew that we had it in us,” Block said.

Junior and second-leg runner Cathelyne Powers agreed, with the stipulation that the win was not set in stone with their seed time, which was the fastest by almost 13 seconds.

“It was definitely possible but not a for-sure thing,” Powers said.

“You never know before you race,” Strabel said.

Block said her team’s exact line-up was up in the air until Saturday morning, but Geraghty said they were pretty well aware of which position fit each person the best.

“I think we’re really good at doing our jobs,” she said. “Each one of us has a specific thing to do and we’re really good at that.”

The team had also had a couple years to develop good chemistry, in and out of track season. Powers, Geraghty and Block have been running cross country, skiing and running track for Colony for the past three years, with third-leg relay team member Jill Bowker and alternate Elisabeth Bowker joining in track and cross country last year as freshmen.

With their year-round dedication and friendship, Block said there was no reason to believe they couldn’t come away with a state championship this year.

“I think we all felt really strong and we had the same team, so why not?” she said.

The four-woman team swapped out the twins this year — Elisabeth Bowker was in her sister’s place for the team’s runner-up finish last year, which was about a third of a second faster than this year’s — but with Block’s graduation, perhaps both Bowkers will run with Powers and Geraghty next year.

Other Valley finishers

Despite Strabel’s comments about stars versus depth at the state championship, Colony had the largest showing of the Valley schools. Geraghty, Block and Jill Bowker each competed in the 1600-meter race as well, placing eighth, 10th and 15th, respectively. On the boys’ side, senior Dakota Peterson-Thompson took fifth and sixth in the 1600 and 3200-meter races with times of 4:31 and 9:54.

In the field events, junior Brandon Nicholson was Colony’s biggest star, breaking the state record in the triple jump with a mark of 46-2 — almost a foot further than his preliminary jump on Friday;

The old record, set by Joel Mahaffey of Soldotna in 1993, stood at 45-10.25 — behind the mark Nicholson set at the 2016 region meet, which would be unofficial unless he set it at the state meet.

And he did.

“We came in expecting that he could very well break it,” said Colony jumps coach Dan Miles.

Like Wasilla’s Ceil Dunleavy, who broke the state record in the girls’ high jump on Friday, Nicholson has historically employed a second coach, former Colony High School and University of Alaska Anchorage standout David Registe for additional practice. So far, it seems to be helping Nicholson.

“He tends to perform well,” Miles said.

Senior Chase Stephens has been Colony’s most prolific jumper on the girls’ side for the last few years, but was unable to eke out a state title in her high school career.

Miles said he was certainly not for lack of effort.

“There was a lot of really good jumpers this year,” he said.

Miles coached for Colony for 10 years before taking a few years-break and returning to the oval this year, and said this year’s state meet boasted “the most competitive field I remember.”

Colony was not the only school that put athletes on the podium this past weekend.

Palmer junior Ruby Woodings saw her highest state finish yet with a third place in the 800-meter race, as did senior Brady Southwick, who came away from the state meet with a third place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.

Southwick said he missed last season due to a necessary knee surgery, and was glad to leave his high school track career on a high note.

“It felt really good to do that well at state after all those years of practice and time,” he said.

Wasilla senior Ben Frick was also glad to finish third in the discus and achieve a personal best distance of 138-3 — 13 feet further than his previous best throw — in his final high school competition.

“I was just like, this is the last time I’m gonna get to throw so I might as well put everything into it,” Frick said.

Houston freshman Allison VanPelt also enjoyed her first podium finish with a fourth place in the 123A 1600-meter race, in addition to a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash and seventh place in the 3200. Houston junior Ben Bitler took fourth in the discus with a throw of 126 feet, and Houston senior Kimberly Quincy was second in the girls' discus with a throw of 93-7.

Finally, Redington freshman Hailey Holland was the first to ever reach the state podium for the Huskies (this being the school's first year in existence), taking third in the girls' 123A discus with a toss of 90-10
