Pats beat Moose from line, win T-Bird Classic

ANCHORAGE — The East T-Bird Classic Championship came down to the line Saturday night. North Pole hit 19 of its 30 free-throw attempts en route to a 48-46 win over the Palmer Moose during the tournament’s final game Saturday night at East Anchorage High School.

Palmer, which hit only a quarter of its free-throw attempts, led going into the final frame, but North Pole used a 14-point fourth to grab the win. The Moose were just 6-for-24 from the free throw line.

Josie Broderick posted a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead North Pole to the tourney title. Ten of her rebounds came on the defensive glass. Meghan McKinnell added nine for the Patriots.

Junior Kasara Brandenburg led Palmer with eight points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Senior Kendal Venzke and sophomore Taylor Blake also scored eight points each. Junior Anna Koehn chipped in six.

Palmer posted back-to-back wins over Bartlett and West Anchorage to climb into the T-Bird Classic final. On Friday, Venzke collected 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Moose to a 48-30 win over West Anchorage during the semifinal round. Brandenburg and Koehn added eight points each in the win.

The Palmer defense held West to only four points in each of the first two quarters.
