Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Paul "Dave" Philo, 80, of Custar, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Medical College of Ohio, as a result of injuries sustained in an Oct. 26 plane crash in Custar.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, Dec. 10, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Custar. Friends were received at the Loomis-Hanneman Funeral Home, 20375 E. Taylor St., Weston, Ohio, on Thursday, Dec. 9.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Pemberville, Ohio, to the late Clifford and Emma (Bashore) Philo. On Aug. 29, 1987, he married Glenna J. Dewese.
Mr. Philo was a homesteader in Alaska for 38 years and operated a dairy farm. He also ran an airstrip on his property and was an airplane mechanic. He was a World War II Army veteran and flew in B-17s and B-29s during the war.
He is survived by his wife, Glenna J. Dewese; sons, Hayes L. (Susan) Philo of Walla Walla, Wash., Hiram A. (Jolene) Philo of Boone, Iowa and Cassius S. Philo of Wasilla; stepsons, Douglas C. (Vickie) Wilhelm of Holgate, Ohio, David A. Brenda of Holgate, Michael P. (Brenda) Wilhelm of Bowling Green, Ohio, Brian J. (Kathy) Wilhelm of Custar and Nathan L. (Amy) Wilhelm of Custar; stepdaughter, Ann M. (Randy) of Perrysburg; half brother, Clifford E. Philo of Perrysburg, Ohio; six grandchildren; 23 stepgrandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to the church or the Pemberville Boys Ranch.
