Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime resident of the north, Paul George Mahoney, 68, died at home Nov. 6, 2002. There will be a funeral mass at noon Nov. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wasilla, followed by a short reception, then to the ranch for burial and reception.
Mr. Mahoney was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Galesville, Wisc., to James and Clara Mahoney. The family moved to Colorado when Paul was young. Paul left Colorado in 1958 with wife Iona, four sons and four horses for Alaska, settling in the Wasilla area to homestead. He lived in and traveled to many places in the north, Alaska and Yukon Territory. He was capable of many trades, including carpenter, operator, miner, horseshoer, auctioneer, farmer and more. Mr. Mahoney loved many things like dancing, singing, card playing, wandering the mountains by horse or dog team, good conversation and his fellow man in general.
Mr. Mahoney is survived by sons Timothy, Thomas, Dennis, Patrick, Daniel and Barnabus; daughters Pauline, Kathleen, Martha, Virginia, Abigail and Georgia; grandchildren Rebekah, Rachael, Sparrow, Joseph, Abel, Alicia, Angela, Aaron, Abigail, Amanda, Amos, Amber, Gideon, John, Jason, Heather, Victoria, Paul, Luke, Kristen, Branden, Sandina, Jolene, Carrie, Shelly, Stephaine, Joleigh, Jenna, Jason, Justin, Jessica, Zachary, Melodie, Sheila Mae, Chester, Francis, Anthony, Peter, Justin, Emily, Kayla, Carissa, Matthew and Vincent; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters Alice, Frances, Mary and Roseann; brothers Robert and Hugh. He was preceded in death by his wife Iona; daughter Victoria; son Vincent; parents; brothers John and William; and sister Theresa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to Brother Francis Shelter in Anchorage. Funeral arrangements were made by family.
