On this day in 1824, the Bureau of Indian Affairs was created by the U.S. War Department.

On this day in 1918, the first cases of the Spanish influenza, so called because of the high number of cases in Spain early in the epidemic, were reported in the United States.

By 1920, more than 1 percent of the world's population (22 million people) had died from the disease.

On this day in 1941, Britain was allowed to borrow money from the United States in order to buy food and arms during World War II under the new Lend-Lease Bill.
