To the editor:
I write you today as a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, and who now enjoys the peace and tranquility of Alaska — the place I was born and raised. I enjoy all outdoor activities, including our amazing fishing. That’s why I have to call on the Environmental Protection Agency to use its authority to stop the proposed Pebble Mine project in the Bristol Bay region.
This mine is ill-conceived (unless you’re one of the foreign companies looking to profit from it). It will damage the ecology of the region, threaten the streams that feed salmon into the area and, most disturbingly, will hold tons and tons of waste, including toxic waste. If any little thing goes wrong (remember the ‘64 quake? I do!), a major cornerstone of our economy and tens of thousands of jobs could be gone for generations, if not forever.
We’ve been blessed with the most amazing natural resources in the world here in Alaska. I’m not against exploration of some of them for mining or energy. But Pebble Mine is not the right project, and Bristol Bay is not the right place. It must be stopped.
