As children and families were heading out to start their morning Thursday, an early-morning accident involving a pedestrian and a school bus closed several streets in Palmer.
According to online posts from the Palmer Police Department, a bus that was not carrying any students at the time was involved in an accident with an adult pedestrian at Arctic Avenue between South Denali Street and Airport Road.
The pedestrian, identified as Rebecca J. Williams, of Wasilla, was declared dead at the scene, according to PPD.
“Preliminary investigation showed Williams was walking in the middle of the lane of travel and the bus driver had no time to react,” PPD officials said in a statement posted on social media later Thursday.
The bus driver remained on scene following the accident, Palmer Police said.
Traffic was diverted while police and emergency services responded to the accident.
