UPDATE — 10:20 a.m. Tuesday:

MEADOW LAKES — Alaska State Troopers said a teenage boy died Monday after being struck by a vehicle on Pittman Road in Meadow Lakes.

According to a trooper dispatch, Austin Edenfield, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by a vehicle driven by Bryon Melton, 28, of Willow. Edenfield’s next of kin was on scene.

An unidentified woman could be seen crying near the scene of the crash in the minutes following the boy's death.

No citations or arrests had been made as of Tuesday in the wreck, which a trooper spokeswoman said remains under investigation.

The accident caused Pittman to be closed for several hours while troopers investigated the scene.

On Tuesday, trooper spokeswoman said troopers were told by witnesses at the scene that Edenfield acted selflessly in his final moments.

"It sounds like he pushed his friend out of the way," she said.

That account could not immediately be corroborated by witnesses.

Troopers could release no further details about the cause of the accident Tuesday.

"That's what's under investigation," Peters said.
