On this day in 1913, the 17th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, leading to direct popular elections for senate seats.

On this day in 1952, President Harry Truman attempted to halt steel workers from striking by announcing he was seizing control of the nation's steel mills. His attempt failed and the strikers walked out.

On this day in 1990, Ryan White died from the effects of AIDS. When his illness was first revealed, White was banned from attending his public school. He soon became a leading figure in promoting a better understanding of the deadly disease.
