Palmer skier Tommy Moe, 20, was one of eight U.S. Ski Team members selected to compete in the World Cup races in Europe in December. Moe and Hilary Lindh of Juneau finished in the top 10 in Thursday’s NASTAR National Pacesetting Trials in Beaver Creek, Colo. Moe was eighth in a field of 25 with a handicap of four in the seven run giant slalom event. Lindh finished eighth out of 23 among the women.
Wasilla Lake could become city property if a new annexation plan is approved by the Wasilla City Council. Wasilla Mayor John Stein said there are two prime reasons the city should embrace the 374-acre lake. One is that it will make it easier for lakeshore residents who want city services such as sewer and water to get them. It also serves to enlarge the political base, allowing more local residents voting rights. Drawbacks include the potential cost increase to enforce recently enacted ordinances regulating vehicles on the lake.
Residents along the lake are also expressing concern that the annexation will infringe upon their rights as property owners.
As it stands now, only about 20 acres of the lake are within the city limits, the city council meeting on Monday will discuss the proposal to include all of the lake and submerged land.
An offer by the managers of Matanuska Maid Dairy to purchase the state-owned creamery and related property in Palmer was not good enough, state agricultural officials said this week. Division Manager Ed Leon said the $2.59 million price offered by Mat-Maid did not meet fair market value for the Anchorage creamery and feed mill in Palmer.
The state’s request for proposals pegged the value of all the property at $5.7 million. Leon also stated that although the bid was not accepted, there is some merit to it and will be discussed further. Mat-Maid manager Joe Van Treek remains optimistic that some kind of deal can be struck after the first of the year.
