On this day in 1864, the phrase "In God We Trust" was ordered by an Act of Congress to be stamped on all newly minted 2-cent pieces. Thereafter, Congress extended its use to all U.S. coins.

On this day in 1970, Earth Day, which was established to bring greater awareness to the importance of protecting Earth's resources and myriad inhabitants, was first observed. By 1990, there were more than 200 million participants from 141 countries.

On this day in 1994, Borge Ousland pulled a 265-pound sled for 52 days to become the first person to make a solo trip to the North Pole.
